Kerrigan officially joining 3rd Congressional District race

Steve Kerrigan will announce through an online video and email messages to his supporters Wednesday morning that he has officially joined the 2018 3rd Congressional District race.

The Lancaster resident is the 2014 Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor and the president of the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund. The nonprofit provides support to families of military personnel killed during post-9/11 active duty service who have ties to Massachusetts.

"I was raised by a public school secretary and a union lineman for Mass Electric in a home that embodied that fundamental American truth -- that if you work hard and play by the rules, you deserve a chance to succeed," Kerrigan stated in his email to supporters.

"Though some in our district enjoy growing prosperity, too many are finding the opportunity to build a better life increasingly out of their reach," he continued. "While wages stay stagnant, the basic costs of living, health care and education climb ever higher. All the while, Republicans in Washington spend their time turning their backs on those most in need."

Kerrigan announced plans to embark on a two-day tour of the 3rd Congressional District. He will make a stop in Lowell at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Owl Diner at 244 Appleton St.

The congressional seat will be vacant starting in 2019 after U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas announced this summer that she will not seek re-election in 2018
